Paris Saint Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé explains why he supports Milan and reveals he spoke to Liverpool before extending his contract with the Ligue 1 giants.
The France star has recently signed a contract extension with PSG until June 2025, snubbing an offer from Real Madrid.
However, the Merengues were not the only club he spoke to while his contract was expiring, as Liverpool also made their move to sign the 2018 France World Cup winner.
“I spoke to Liverpool because it’s my mum’s favourite club. I don’t why she supports the Reds, you should ask her,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Jokes aside, they are a great club. I had already met them five years ago when I was playing for Monaco. We briefly spoke this time, but in the end, the choice was between Real Madrid and PSG. Everyone knows that I wanted to go to Madrid last summer because I thought it was the right choice.”
A picture of Mbappé wearing a Milan shirt as a kid had become viral over the last few weeks, so Mbappé was asked his thoughts on the Rossoneri, who have just won the 19th Scudetto in their history.
“My bond with Milan is special. My nanny was Italian and I spent a lot of time with her family, they all supported Milan,” he revealed.
“Thanks to them, I watched many Milan games and I’ve become a fan. I used to say: if I ever play in Italy, it will only be at Milan. If I had said something different, they would have killed me…
“Jokes aside, I can only congratulate the Rossoneri, I have many French friends and Ibrahimovic, a legend that I really respect.”
France are one of the favourites to win the World Cup at the end of the year, while Italy have failed to qualify for the second successive time.
“Better for us, because Italy is a top team, but I was sad for my friends Marco Verratti and Gigio Donnarumma,” said Mbappé.
“It was tough for them because we were knocked out of the Champions League after their World Cup elimination. That’s what football is about. Italy will have a new generation of football and you will be back.”
Why did he reject Real Madrid’s offer to extend with PSG? Was it all about the money?
“Things have changed. I am French, I know I am important to my country, so I had to think well. It’s not only about football, but also about life,” the France star claimed.
“I want to live well in my country at the end of my career. I thank Real Madrid and their fans for their affection even though I wore that shirt only for a few weeks when I was playing in the youth teams at 14. Good luck with the Champions League Final.
“I haven’t talked about money with Florentino or Nasser Al Khelaifi. Only about football and titles to win. My mum and lawyers talk about money. Of course, I got money in the bank account and I take a look at it sometimes, but what matters to me is the pitch, winning trophies, being the best and being happy and right now, I am happy.”
