Kylian Mbappe is likely to join Real Madrid, if he ends up at the club, he would not be able to play the first LaLiga Santander game of the season for his new club.
The French striker has been suspended by Ligue 1, and FIFA legislation suggest that the suspension will carry into LaLiga Santander should he make a move this summer.
The incident that resulted in the suspension took place in Paris Saint-Germain’s last match, away to Montpellier, and went almost unnoticed.
In the last few minutes of a match that the French champions won comfortably (4-0), with Mbappe on the scoresheet, the forward picked up a yellow card.
The sanction, which has been confirmed by the French Football Federation, comes into effect from next week.
In other words, it will not prevent the player from taking part in this weekend’s match between PSG and Metz at the Parc des Princes, in what could be his farewell to the Parisian club.
So, the sanction will be served on the first matchday of the 2022/23 season, whether the player remains in Ligue 1 with PSG or switches to LaLiga Santander to join Real Madrid.
It would, should it happen, be a curious way to start his time as a Real Madrid player.
